After the Germans occupied Hungary, Rahel arrived in Budapest with her husband, Peter Fischer, and joined the Zionist Youth underground activities as a worker for the International Red Cross. As of September 1944 she dealt with the rescue of Jewish children, taking them out of the ghetto to safe places such as the children’s house on Budafoki Street.
